Enjoy a tour of York, the Walled City. Start at Lord Mayor&rsquo;s Walk where you will meet your guide. Your first visit will be to the York City Walls which date back to the Roman occupation of Britain in 1st century AD. The Walls were used as a fortification not only by the Romans but also the Danes who occupied York in the 9th century. The walls fell into disrepair throughout the years but have been rebuilt during both the English Civil War and the Victorian period of the 19th century.

Next visit York Minster, a gothic cathedral dating back to the 14th century which dominates the city&rsquo; skyline. Continue to St Michael-le-Belfrey where Guy Fawkes was baptised in 1570 before visiting Stonegate, an attractive old street full of many independent shops.

Next, head to the site of the Yorkshire Museum where you can admire this19th century cultural centre as well as its botanical gardens located on the banks of the River Ouse. See also St Mary&rsquo;s Abbey which dates back to the11th century and was once the richest abbey in the north of England. Crossover the River Ouse over the Scarborough Railway Bridge which dates back to 1845.

Visit the National Railway Museum, providing an extensive history of the railway network and development in the UK; there are over100 locomotives and nearly 300 other items of rolling stock here. After, continue along the banks of the River Ouse, passing the 11th-century All Saints Church before returning back over the river across Bridge Street.

Your final stop will be at the Shambles, an old street where butchers used to display their meats for sale. The Shambles is now home to a number of restaurants and shops and is the perfect place to end your tour and explore&nbsp;independently.
